RADIO - GLORIOUS GUILDHALL

For our 2nd show we have been tasked to make a factual radio show on the guildhall, focusing on the music scene and performances of the guildhall. Our title we have been given is "Glorious Guildhall". I have decided to put myself forward for presenter as I have experience presenting for Pure.FM in first and second year and also my dissertation is about radio and podcasting. It seemed like a perfect position for me as I am also interested in 60's music and I know that's a period in time the guildhall was used a lot, especially  for big name bands.

To get more of idea about the guildhall and to surround myself with what happens there I took a visit to the 60's exhibition that exists there. This gave me more of an idea about how the guildhall portrays itself and what sort of establishment they are. I found out that there is a rich and deep past that surrounds it and that even though it isn't in use as much as it used to be, it still takes pride in everything they do and offer a range of different things to different people, from singing classes for the over 55 to Chase & Status performing there live. As a presenter I want take an interest in the work the Guildhall does and convey it as a serious bit of history for music and culture.

I have been to the guildhall even before the 60's exhibition visit to see Catherine Tate live and also for a few freshers events. I have only seen things hosted there that were an interest to me. To find out what else happens there I booked my self to see the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra the day before the show so I have something to talk about and also experience something a little different that the Guildhall has to offer.

The live show was going out live from Express.FM a local radio station. Unfortunately in this picture here it looks like I want to kill my lecture Katie, but as you can tell by the slight smile I have on my face on the picture on the right here this is not the case.

The live show came and went, and I'm just about happy with my performance this time round. There were aspects to the presenting I knew I could have improved on but  as a whole nothing detrimental happened and I'm happy with how it all turned out.

Listening back I notice I sometimes get a stutter and this is due to me being in my head to much and worrying, I need to just go for it and not worry so much. This was due to my nerves. As a presenter nerves are something that need to be controlled and overall I think I did a good job putting myself out there and with practice nerves are something that I can already feel slowly fading away. I also feel reading off a script on a live radio is distracting and I have never done that before. I would have much preferred if the script was bullet pointed or split into sections to remember as having a script makes me feel restricted and robotic and this came out in my voice. This is still a learning experience for me so I'm glad I now know that reading off scripts is not the best idea for me when presenting. My co-host Frankie was very upbeat and cheerful and listening back I could have done a bit more to keep on par with her personality. I also instead of saying the pass tense of read said "readen". This isn't even a word and have removed it from my vocabulary, even though I never use it anyway. At 1:34 I leave a pause for no reason which is also due to me being in my head to much. I need to be more on the ball next time and attentive.

The group quiz section with Layal, Dave and Andy (who were living from another studio in the Guildhall itself), I really enjoyed and thought it went smoothly as there was so many of us to bounce off. Stories were being thrown around and everyone was having fun. I found this bit easier as there wasn't a script to stick to and I found myself sounding more sure of myself as what I was saying was thought of by myself and said in the moment. However there seems to be a return of people ignoring me as even live on the show I get spoken over when we are going round to say how many points we got on the quiz. Doesn't seem like a co-incidence when people are saying how many points they got and when it comes round to me I just get spoken over. I had to let it not get to me though as it would affect my presenting voice. When we got to my segment where I was meant to speak about my experience at the Guildhall I was told to it had to be shortened as we were running over. It was annoying I spend time and money into this segment of mine but I do understand the nature of the industry and the reason to why it had to be short. I still managed to get out the bulk of my experience seeing the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, without making it seem rushed so I'm proud I managed to deal with this little hiccup accordingly.

There was one part of the show I also thought sounded obviously staged and that is Joe's section where he spoke about the 60's exhibition live from the Guildhall. In hindsight it was a good idea but the way my co-host and I were asking him about the exhibition as if we knew more than him sounded a bit off and describing something that was made to be a visual experience more than and audio one is hard for anyone.

Towards the end whilst wrapping up the show I was given a signal while I was ending the show to stretch the last bit out and so I did by mentioning the fact me and Frankie are "Television and Broadcasting students from the University of Portsmouth". Even though this isn't much to add it ended up meaning that we were dead on 20 minutes. I'm glad I managed to prove myself to everyone in this moment and show that under pressure I did the right thing. With the adrenaline of being live and everyone watching me in the room as I could see the clock countdown, felt even more amazing that I got the show to the exact time it needed to be. Overall I do have areas I cant get better at but by no means was I disappointed in my presenting and in fact I'm very proud of myself I this moment and I feel the show went very well as a whole and everyone did amazing, but to judge for yourself listen to the show below.
